After  RecurDyn Contact- Becoming an Experienced User, 1st Episode   and  RecurDyn Contact - Becoming an Experienced User, 2nd Episode   , in this episode, we will look into primitive 3D contact objects.

Note: Contact objects can be used in a variety of ways depending on the elements in the model, such as its geometries and parameters. Therefore, the following information should be used as a basic guide to working with contact objects. In actual models, the contact objects may behave differently than described in this guide.

Primitive 3D Contact

If the model has objects with a general shape, you may want to use the general contact objects, such as solid contact objects or geo surface contact objects.

For objects with a specific shape, such as a sphere, box, or cylinder, you may want to use primitive 3D contact objects to perform analyses quickly and accurately.

For objects with a general shape, the shape is divided into small facets to find a contact point. Therefore, a small deviation occurs between the actual shape and the shape used to find a contact point.

For objects with a specific shape, you can express the object mathematically, so you can find the accurate contact point and calculate the contact force.

Therefore, you can get fast and accurate results.

You can only use primitive 3D contact objects when a sphere or box was created in RecurDyn. If you imported a CAD file, you need to recreate the objects using the functions provided by RecurDyn to use primitive 3D contact objects on them.

As primitive 3D contact objects provide faster and more accurate analysis than general contact objects, you may want to invest some time to recreate the objects in RecurDyn.

For example,

For models like the one described in the  RecurDyn Contact- Becoming an Experienced User, Second Episode section, you can use a sphere-to-sphere contact object and sphere-in-sphere contact object to perform analyses that are at least ten times faster than when you use solid contact objects.

For piston models, you can use a cylinder-in-cylinder contact object. For bearing models, you can use a sphere-in-torus contact object.

Although general contact objects can be used regardless of the shape of the object, you may want to use primitive 3D contact objects instead to obtain fast and accurate analysis results.
