• When RecurDyn was made its debut, what made Japan market accept RecurDyn more earlier than other markets. (What was the vision of RecurDyn in Japan market?)
There are several reasons why Japan market accepted RecurDyn relatively smoothly.
We think the most fundamental driver which makes us successful in Japan market was “trust” between customers and us. Good example is a birth story of MTT2D. We met an engineer of film company at a trade show and heard that he had been using customized ADAMS for years to simulate film behavior. And, he had a big budget to buy additional licenses of ADAMS to let more design engineers use it. We asked him to give chance to replace ADAMS with RecurDyn and he agreed to let us try benchmark. At the time, RecurDyn was version 3. It was very tough to make a film behavior model without using a tool like MTT2D. And, its simulation result was not so superior to that of ADAMS. It must be much more promised for him to keep using ADAMS continuously, but he had trusted us and decided to switch from ADAMS to RecurDyn. He invested the budget for ADAMS to FB for development of MTT2D. It took long time for maturity of MTT2D. We had to apologize to him many times for its immaturity, but he was very patient keeping trust for us. Suzuki cannot forget his smiling face when MTT2D quality had finally reached to his acceptable level. MTT2D had become a booster of RecurDyn business in Japan. This is just one of examples. We have been supported by lots of trust from customers in many cases. So, FBJ strongly thinks that we cannot betray trust from customers definitely.
• What was the key point to understand RecurDyn to user in its beginning period?
Superficially, we had been speaking loudly about “Recursive Formulation” to promote RecurDyn in the market. But, “Toolkit” was much more helpful to sell RecurDyn in early days. The earliest toolkit was “Track”. It was well accepted by construction machinery companies and heavy industry. Next step was “Chain”. We had a benchmark for a motorcycle company and they had been impressed with the performance. So, they decided to invest on RecurDyn for development of Engine toolkits family. It was a crack point for us to penetrate into automotive market.
And, a hidden weapon was “analytical contacts”. In general, good convergence of integration contributes to solution speed much more than efficiency of formulation itself. In the sense, analytical contacts are very good for smooth calculation. RecurDyn was a later product. The market was filled with ADAMS. In such a market, we had to solve difficult problems that existing software failed to solve. To do that, “analytical contact” was very helpful. In such a way, we had moved forward step by step to expand our territory in Japan market.
• User needs may change (develop) as industry development. What is the future of simulation program what you can expect by selling RecurDyn in Japanese market?
Multibody dynamics software will be being required to improve calculation speed continuously and eternally, especially for models with huge FEM bodies. Because hardware for parallel processing is becoming powerful more and more and our competitors are employing this situation more and more successfully, requirement to RecurDyn to employ such environments will become stronger and stronger.
Also, I think one of important direction for improvement in long term is “tribology”. In mechanism, tribology is a fundamental factor which decides behavior of mechanism. But, implementation of expertise in this area is the most behind in the progress of multibody dynamics. To move to this direction, correlation with experiments is the key. It is not easy, but we should keep it in mind and try to move forward step by step. Suzuki is making effort for this direction.
