FunctionBay is proud of two students from the Brazil University, ‘Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido,’ who used RecurDyn as part of their senior thesis research.

Both research topics were related to spinal fusion surgery. This is an important topic because 30% of those who undergo spinal fusion surgery need to have an additional procedure within 5 years due to mechanical problems.

The first student is Carlos Adolfo Rocha de Oliveira, who studied disc stresses in the vicinity of fused vertebrae. His thesis was titled, ‘Dynamic Simulation of a Lumbar Vertebra Assembly Used in Arthrodesis Lumbar Surgery’.

In this study, a lumbar spine model was developed using Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD), simulating the characteristic features of the spine, such as flexion-extension, lateral flexion and torsion.

The stresses in the discs generated by such movements were analyzed, as well as the displacements of the vertebrae of the natural spine and with arthrodesis apparatus.

The second student is Antonio Batista de Morais Segundo, who studied the effect of changing pedicle screw geometric parameters on the loosening and tear-out strength of the screw. His thesis was, ‘The Influence of Design Parameters, Through Analysis of the Dynamics of Multibody Systems, of a Pedicle Screw in a Fastening Capacity.’

He found that changing the screw diameter did not have a noticeable effect. His research sets the stage for future studies to evaluate the effect of changing screw taper, screw thread pitch, thread spacing and the thickness of the screw thread.

Congratulations to Carlos and Antonio for their research and for completing their Bachelor’s Degrees in Mechanical Engineering!

We are working on the translation of their thesis documents to English. Please let us know if you would be interested in receiving a copy of these documents once we have completed the translations.
