Released in October 2017, RecurDyn V9R1 has enhanced modeling capabilities and contact analysis for MBD (Multi-Body Dynamics) analysis.

Upgrading the Mesher core engine for easier and more accurate MFBD (Multi-Flexible Body Dynamics) analysis and adding new toolkits for multidisciplinary analysis solutions implemented in one environment will maximize user's design performance.

Let's take a closer look at the Mesher upgrade in this article.

In RecurDyn V9R1, the core engine and Auto Mesh in Mesher were largely upgraded. The Mesher upgrade is an important feature that affects the performance and accuracy of MFBD (Multi-Flexible Body Dynamics) analysis containing flexible bodies. Followed by the last article related to the Mesh core engine upgrade, the major improvements on Mesher in RecurDyn V9R1 will be a main topic in this article.

Auto Mesh Upgrade

Along with the Mesh core engine upgrade, new mesh options allow you to create better quality of meshes.

1. Gradation Factor

  • A value close to 0 leads to a more progressive variation of mesh size
  • In case of 2 (Default value), a result similar to V8 is obtained.

2. Chordal Effect Ratio

  • The mesh size is reduced locally to limit the chordal error between the mesh and the geometry surface..
  • If ‘Relative’ option is selected, the value is applied as a percentage of the local radius.
  • If ‘Absolute’ option is selected, the value is used as an absolute tolerance value
  • Default value = Relative & 0.1 (10% of local radius)

3. Minimize Triangle Element & Quad Elements Only

  • If ‘Minimize Triangle Element’ option is selected, mesher generates the minimum number of triangle elements.
  • If ‘Quad Elements Only‘ option is selected, mesher generates only quad elements.

Geometry Refinement

The geometry for the mesh can be regenerated by using Geometry Refinement feature. For example, user can use the Remove Edge option to decide whether to generate meshes with the edge removed or with the edge maintained.

1. Remove Small Feature – Effective Ratio

  • User can generate mesh from the original geometry, ignoring minor geometries.
  • The effective ratio of the selected geometry can be measured using the Select button. (This value must be entered in the Remove Small Feature input window)

2. Remove Edge

  • If 'Remove Edge' is selected, the mesh will be generated with the selected edge ignored.

Local Remesh

Local Remesh & Advanced mesh

  • After auto-meshing or advanced meshing, user can define the different remesh settings on the different surfaces.
  • For example, user run the first remesh on a surface, and then close the remesh dialog. Open the remesh dialog again and run another remesh and close it.
  • To apply an additional remesh setting, you should close the Local Remesh dialog and reopen it.

Manual Mesh

Extrude and Sweep have been updated. When user runs an extrude manual mesh on the edge (or surface) geometry, mesher will generate the shell (or solid) mesh result along the defined direction vector and attached that mesh result to the original solid mesh data. When user runs a sweep manual mesh, the sweep solid mesh can be created using shell mesh along the defined geometry curve data. In particular, Helix curve can be used to create coil spring-shaped meshes.

1. Extrude Mesh

  • User can create 2D mesh using edge geometry.
  • User can create 3D mesh using surface geometry.
  • If ‘Maintain Existing Mesh’ option is checked, the extruded mesh merges with the original mesh.

2. Sweep Mesh

  • Mesher can create the 3D mesh model using 2D mesh and curves.
  • The end point of the curve should be on the surface of 2D mesh.
  • User can create coil spring-shaped mesh using Helix curve and Shell mesh.

It is now possible to create more precise flexible bodies quickly and efficiently through the Mesher improvements in RecurDyn V9R1. This allows you to obtain more accurate results for RecurDyn's powerful MFBD (Multi-Flexible Body Dynamics) analysis and to analyze the larger models.

Don’t miss the opportunity to experience a new RecurDyn/Mesher now!
