Mesh quality significantly impacts both the accuracy and speed of simulations.

Therefore, verifying mesh quality and determining optimal parameters are critical steps in mesh generation.

This article introduces the Mesh Quality Check feature in RecurDyn/Mesher, essential for enhancing mesh quality, and discusses various parameters, including the mesh aspect ratio.

RecurDyn/Mesher provides Mesh 'Quality Check' to confirm if the mesh is good enough.

In Mesher mode, [Mesher]-[Qual. Check]

If you click 'Preview' button in the quality check dialog box, the elements which violates the selected conditions are highlighted.

In general, aspect ratio is the most commonly used criterion and is considered the most important condition for assessing mesh quality. Several options are available as listed below.

  • Aspect Ratio : Ratio of the longest edge and the shortest edge of the element
    • An aspect ratio closer to 1 is ideal, and values below 3 to 5 are generally considered acceptable.
    • It is not good if there are 'many' elements which has the bigger aspect ratio than 10.
  • Angle : the size of the interior angle of an element.
    • the ideal value varies depending on the element type
  • Skewness : asymmety of the shape of an element (acceptable < 45~60 degrees)
    • A value closer to 0 is ideal.
  • Warping : (only for Shell4 element)
    • A value closer to 0 is ideal. (Acceptable < 10~18 degrees)
  • Tapering:  (only for Shell4 element)
    • A value closer to 0 is ideal. (Acceptable < 0.5)

  • Preview:  highlights the elements which violate the selected conditions.

An aspect ratio closer to 1 is ideal; however, the ideal value may vary depending on the element type.
