When a beam geometry has only face surfaces, as shown above, you can simulate and analyze it more efficiently by creating a mesh with a simplified element based on the characteristic behavior of the system. To use the Shell4 element and the Manual Mesh function to create a solid mesh, perform the following steps:
Select the target geometry to mesh, and then right-click the geometry. In the context menu, click Mesh to enter Mesh edit mode.
On the Home tab, in the Measure group, click Distance to measure the length of the target beam.
On the Geometry tab, in the Surface group, click Face Surface to designate the face.
On the Mesher tab, in the Mesher group, click Mesh. In the Mesh dialog window that appears, select the 2D surface that you created in Step 3, and then apply the settings shown in the following figure. (You can adjust the shell element type (Mesh Type) and the element size to suit your analysis requirements.)
On the Mesher tab, in the Mesher group, click Manual. In the Manual Mesh dialog window, set the Type to Extrude and apply the other settings.
Click Mesh to create the mesh.
